Emerald Award for Sustainable Tourism
We were delighted and honoured this week to receive the Emerald Award for Sustainable Tourism from The Burren Eco-Tourism Network!
In order to join this network group based here in North Clare, each business must train for and complete a code of practice. From a hotel harnessing all its electricity needs through hydropower to an artisan food producer embracing sustainable practices, the Code involves members of the Burren Ecotourism Network measuring and making reductions in environmental output as well as promoting local produce, conservation and taking part in community outreach and advocacy initiatives, networking events and green purchasing. Developed with EU LIFE funding and launched by the Burren and Cliffs of Moher UNESCO Global Geopark Code of Practice in 2016, the Geopark Code of Practice for Sustainable Tourism is the only sustainable initiative of its kind in Ireland and in the network of 169 Geoparks spread across 44 countries.
The Emerald Award is only given to businesses that acheive over 93% in the code submission. We are proud to say that we acheived 97% !
